Every year I create a compilation CD of the year’s best music that I have come across and give it to friends and family around new year. (See below for some sample covers). As I’m always buying old CDs this isn’t just stuff released this year, so you do get an eclectic mix of songs. As I’m in South Africa for two weeks around Christmas/new year, I’ll be a bit late so I thought I’d share a few albums/songs that will definately feature on the CD.

T2004 T2005

The Feeling – Twelve Stops and Home.

This has got to be my album of the year. Some very catchy tunes and a very uplifting album. When I first heard “Sewn” on the radio, I really wanted to know who had written the song and then when I heard “Fill My Little World” I knew I had to get the album. Top album songs include Helicopter (a definite for T2006) and Blue Piccadilly.

The Brand New Heavies – Get Used To It

I’ve liked the Brand New Heavies since I heard “Apparently Nothing” and fell in love with the bass and vocal driven, funky music this group creates. They’ve changed numerous band members over the years, but I still like their new stuff. I think their style is called “Acid Jazz” for those of you in the know, but I love it. Not sure which is my favourite track off the new album, but you’ll find out when T2006 is released.

Controversial choice: Hackers. For the (select) few of you who have seen this film and actually remember it, you are probably thinking ‘That film was crap’. I know I shouldn’t agree with you, but I actually agree with you partly, the film shouldn’t work. It’s cheesy in places and clichéd in a lot more, but it works and I love it. This is the film I’ll put on when I need cheering up or if I’m in the mood for a laugh. You also have an amazing soudtrack, with songs from the Prodigy, Orbital, Leftfield and Stereo MCs (I know they are dance tracks, but they are very good).

Hackers

You also have to laugh at the CGI representation of computer hacking, but it is quite fun. Also I think I forgot to mention that Angelina Jolie plays the ‘heroine’.

Saw Casino Royale last night. One of the best James Bond films I’ve seen in a while. Lots of action and hardly any cheesy lines.

casino_royale

They seem to have started again with the Bond franchise this time, showing you Bond getting his 00 status and changing lots of his signature
lines. The only thing lacking that I could see was a decent car chase. Bond did have an amazing Aston Martin DBS, but we didn’t really get to see what it could do.

Well we’re half way through and the next film is Léon. What an amazing film, with one of the coolest lead characters, you’ll ever find in a film. The story of a hitman who adopts a young child when her family is murdered. Not only does this have some amazing gun battles :D , but the relationship formed between the two main characters is very touching.

Léon

I’m not entirely sure if this counts as a foreign film or not, as although the lead actor and director are French all of the dialog is English. If it it does count then it’s my only foreign film in my top ten.
